Star Sign Guesser
This is not your typical astrology website for the following reasons.
1. It does not promote the belief that astrology can predict the future.
2. It does not promote the belief that our personalities are determined at the moment of birth.
It does promote the idea that the personality traits are set at the time of conception. It is a new radical idea that may upset many traditional astrologers and be scoffed at by narrow-minded scientists, just as Darwin was scoffed at when he produced his Theory of Evolution and is still scoffed at by many religious folk. For those of you who are more open-minded let me explain.
I first became interested in astrology in 1978 when a friend lent me Linda Goodman's Sun Signs. This book described the personality traits of each sign in great detail. Of course I read my own sign first (Libra) and I was blown away by how accurate it was. Prior to this I thought I was a bit of a freak because everyone I knew seemed so different to me. This explained a lot and I realised that everyone is different and there were lots of other people like myself - Librans. However I am not a spiritual person. I have an analytical skeptical mind. I gained A levels in Mathematics and Physics at school and went on to study Computer Science at UMIST. So I found the explanations for these personality traits hard to accept. How could they be set at birth by the stars? I read all the other sun signs to see if I could identify with any of them. I couldn't. I looked up the personality traits of friends, family and famous people. Most seemed to match very well. Some did not and I will discuss this later. I studied astrology in detail and learned how to draw birth charts. These I found disappointing. They were so vague they could be interpreted in many different ways. I eventually came to the conclusion that the 'science' of astrology had been embellished by early astrologers to make it more complicated so that only they could interpret it. Much the same happens now in many careers such as medicine and law. But I still believe in the basic personality traits. Astrology has evolved over a long time since the Babylonians created the twelve signs in the 2nd millenium BC. Like medicine it has changed and evolved over the centuries. It was not that long ago that doctors were using leeches and blood-letting to cure all manner of ailments. However, the understanding of medicine improved so maybe it is time for the understanding of astrology to change, evolve and improve. Very little serious research has been undertaken into astrology since it was dismissed as a pseudoscience. Can you imagine if we had done the same with medicine after realising that blood-letting was killing healthy people? Of course medicine is a lot more profitable. Astrology has stood the test of time. It has been around much longer than the conventional religions and it's popularity still thrives. Some scientific studies into astrology have taken place but these studies were more focussed on disproving the astrological prediction side of astrology and on the natal birth charts rather than the 12 sun sign personalities.
Hence I created this website to provide some evidence that people do have personality types corresponding to the time of their birth. Now, as I mentioned previously, it seems illogical that anyone's personality would be determined at the time of their birth so after giving this some thought, it seemed to me that the personality traits are held in the DNA. The Babylonians did not know about DNA! The DNA of every person is not set at the time of birth but at the time of conception! This does not mean that your birth sign is when you were conceived though. We do not know who determined the personality traits. It may have been the Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks or Romans. But I suspect they determined these personality types from a study of the population, not from some random constellation in the sky as many cynics suggest who do not respect the intelligence of the scholars of the ancient empires. However since they had no knowledge of DNA or the process of conception, they decided it was the time of birth that determined personality and assigned the personalities accordingly. The personality traits are still as originally determined but it is not the date of birth that determines it but 9 months after conception. Of course many babies are born early or late and these babies may actually be born under the sign before or after their 'true' sign. Consecutive signs in the zodiac are often totally different from each other so those people born late or premature who read their personality traits will assume it is all rubbish but if they were to read the sign before or after they may discover a more accurate match to their personality.
Not many people know when they were conceived so we have to use date of birth but people who do not feel their birth sign is a good match should read the signs before or after.
After a lifetime's study of people and their personalities I have also come to another conclusion. The birth signs do not suddenly switch from one sign to another at a specific date and time but slowly merge and change. eg. I am a Libran but I was born in the early days of Libra and I have a lot of Virgo traits also (analytical, critical, perfectionist). Those born late in Libra may have more Scorpio traits.
This website captures date of birth after it has 'guessed' the birth sign so that I can compare the results. I do not expect anywhere near 100% accuracy because as I mentioned above many people may have been born in the 'wrong' sign due to being late or premature and also because people often have a biased view of themselves which can make the answers inaccurate. If everyone answered the questions totally randomy I would expect to get an accuracy of 1 correct match out of 12. Anything better than that suggests that further research may be worthwhile.
What would be the purpose of humans having 12 different personality types you may ask? In evolutionary terms a species will be more adaptable to changing circumstances if there are different types. eg. In wartime, agrressive types may have a better chance of survival. In peacetime, farmers may have a better survival chance. Ideally having both types in your tribe provides a good source of food and a strong defence. If everyone was a farmer they might get destroyed by a more aggressive rival tribe. If all were aggressive soldier types they may starve to death or end up killing each other. In modern society if everyone was the same type we would all want to do the same jobs!
Major advances are currently being made in genetics and DNA. I only have a layman's knowledge of these but I have a few theories about how the different personality traits may be achieved.
1. Women are born with 1 million eggs some of which may be fertilised in later life. What if these eggs had different DNA which determined different personality traits and what if specific eggs are released depending on the time of year? Have geneticists looked at these eggs to determine whether they have different DNA?
2. Similar to the above, does all sperm have the same DNA each month or does the DNA change depending on the time of year?
3. At the time of conception I was taught that the combination of DNA from the egg and sperm was completely random which is why brothers and sisters were not all identical but what if that combination is influenced by the time of year?
With the recent tremendous advances in DNA research I expect it will not be long before personality traits can be attributed to specific DNA strings. Once that is achieved we only need to compare these DNA strings to see if there is a correlation between these DNA strings and dates of birth. I expect this could happen in the near future.
